Eye Candy: Anthropologie June 2012 catalogue

Thursday, May 31, 2012

This top is not going to flatter 80% of the Anthropologie shopping population.
It's pretty, but it may as well be artwork rather than clothing.

Anthropologie has officially unveiled some of the looks from the June 2012 catalogue on their website...and I'm dying over here, in ways both good and bad.

Let's start with the good: the photography is just gorgeous. And the clothes are once again mostly center-stage, with a few randomly placed cats blocking the view. In the store itself, I'm noticing improvements in materials. Aside from sheerness which still seems to be an infectious disease among Anthropologie designers, I'm seeing rayon used in ways that make sense for summer clothing; more real cotton and silk as opposed to their poly-whatever doppelgängers and better stitching at the seams and hemlines. And as I walk around the stores I'm finding designs that make me really excited. I just purchased a couple of work/weekend tops I'm really happy with: We Love Vera's Split Narcissus Shell ($78) and Myne's Sahuarita Blouse ($158) both of which will get the review treatment shortly and the latter of which will see OOTD love over on my tumblr this week.

And then there's the catalogue which is....confused. Or confusing at the least. I found myself flipping through these images going oh, no...oh no...oh no no no! I don't understand the duality. In-store, Anthropologie seems to be experimenting with proportional balance. Wavy tops with stem-like pants, skirts with pouf paired with sleek tops, etc. And while these stylings are still challenging for a curvy girl like me, at least I can pick and choose a wardrobe from that. The catalogue meanwhile seems to be stuck in 1970s California. Loose, easy and kicked back is a nice lifestyle to aspire to but these clothes aren't practical! Worse, while the photography is beautiful these clothes do not speak to me. So if I lived far away from an Anthropologie I wouldn't be enticed to make the trip. I have always loved the way Anthropologie's best catalogues tell a story. I am not confident in the catalogue voice right now though. It is not speaking the same language as either the website or the stores. They've gone split-brain.

My biggest frustration is that the majority of the catalogue stuff is not going to look right on me. I'll try some pieces anyway but I will be shocked if the proportions work. It makes me a little mad to be honest. I don't want the catalogue to go away but I'm still left wishing for the days when nearly every corner was dog-eared. This post is pure reaction to the photos and I hope you'll share your thoughts in the comments. Maybe I'm just way off.

Openwork Army Jacket ($148)
This is one of the pieces I'm eager to try,
though I have doubts about the cropped silhouette.
It's just gorgeous.
Notice the tricky photography with the model jutting out her hips
and leaning back to make the jacket look longer than it is.
It's another challenging shape for anyone with curves.

A potentially fun summer party dress.
The rounded neckline and high seam will be rough on larger chests.
Notice how the model shots on the product page never show
a straight-on shot. It would showcase how wide you can look.

Love this dress a million times over. More like this please!

Adorable dotted print; good dress length.
With all respect to the model, this shot does not look flattering.
And if the model is having issues, how will the rest of us do?

A great styling idea is shown here -- tucking chambray into a gently pleated skirt.
The sleeves of this top look like a challenge.
Still, I'm excited to try it on.

The festival-lover in me thinks this top would be great.
The rest of me wonders about a split top parting
over the great expanse that is my hips.

The top was so exciting to me on the hanger but didn't hold up on my form.
Review upcoming...makes shoulders look broad.
The skirt has a lovely mix of patterns and I can't wait to try it.

The color is right but the shape is more maternity than eternally flattering.
The suggestion of a thick belt (not part of the top) is helpful.

Another tough neckline for most busts, but a stunning dress worth a shot.

Easy, light and pretty. One or two of these dresses is a wonderful thing.
Too many leave me with nothing to wear to work.

So community, I turn to you. How do you feel about these preview items? Did I just wake up cranky this morning? Any wishlist additions for you? What do you think about the stores vs. the catalogue?

I'm surrounded by Anthropologies!

Tuesday, May 29, 2012

This summer, Anthropologie is set to open its sixth NYC outpost on the Bowery. Sixth. For those keeping track that will be four Anthropologies between Broome and 23rd Street against zero in the non-Manhattan boroughs. Six stores within 5 miles of each other. It's an embarrassment of riches that might make even Starbucks blush.

In a city where anything further than 10 blocks away may as well be on the other side of the world it's nice to have Anthropologies drifting closer and closer to me. More stores also means more chances of finding an item I want in-stock, avoiding the ever-increasing wait of charge/sends in favor of picking up the piece myself. But I have to wonder if this is becoming too much. By comparison, Anthropologie's younger-skewing sibling Urban Outfitters has eight Manhattan locations. J.Crew has about 13 stores in the city (of which four are men's shops, two are collection stores and at least one is a Crewcuts location) and the Gap has just under 20. It's too early to say whether the newest Anthro will be a regular store or an accessories store. I am told it will not be a BHLDN.

Does Anthropologie aspire to become ubiquitous? In recent quarterly earnings calls the leadership team has repeated its commitment to expansion both here and abroad. I worry that if the store becomes too common the pieces I love for being special will start appearing more frequently on the street. If the city is so important to Anthro, why not open a location in Brooklyn or Queens? Manhattan is pretty much Anthro-plenty. I rarely hit all the stores anymore -- Rockefeller and the UES locations are infrequent stops for me now.

There is another side to this story. I heard the news about the Bowery store while in Waikiki Beach, which has no Anthropologie stores. During college I lived in a no-Anthro zone and it was a big deal to make the trip down to southern Denver to visit the nearest location. My childhood shopping malls in Danbury and Stamford, CT still lack an Anthropologie. Maybe the question isn't so much of too many stores but of the concentration of stores.

I thought it would be nice to open a community discussion about this. How many Anthropologie stores are within an hour of you? What towns that don't have an Anthropologie store should get one? New York Anthro lovers, are you excited about the upcoming Bowery location?

Playing the Sale Guessing Game

Monday, May 28, 2012

I hope everyone is enjoying the long Memorial Day weekend! A few Navy friends of mine made it for Fleet Week this year and on Saturday night we had a grand old time partying in midtown. To all those with family, loved ones or friends in the military thank you for your service. I have a huge amount of respect for those who give of themselves to keep our freedoms secure!!

On the topic of sale, my guess is that any markdowns this week will come on Wednesday rather than tomorrow. But one never knows so we'll play the Sale Guessing Game just in case! The sale sections at all the NYC Anthropologies still seem well-stocked. If new cuts come this week I really have no idea where they'll put some of that clothing! How is your store's sale section looking?

This post is no guarantee that any of these items will actually be on  sale come tomorrow. All community reports are unofficial. What are you hoping to see? What do you think  will/won't go on sale?

About due for a shuffle to sale.

The weekend in-store community post

Friday, May 25, 2012

I have noticed a lot of community members sharing in-store deals and spots in the comments of various posts. Inspired by the weekly Seek & Find posts started by the lovely Alexis over at J.Crew Aficionada, I think now is a good time to start a similar weekly post here.

This post is for community members to trade information. You can ask for help in finding an item, report back on what you saw in-store at your local Anthro, ask general questions, make a request, or just stop by to say hello. I love how helpful this community can be! Please note that items for sale belong in the Trade Market, as do 'looking to find' requests for past season items. Comments that erroneously get posted in this thread will be deleted.

Some FAQs....
- What does "sub" mean?It means that people are subscribing to the comment thread. You can do this by either clicking the small RSS icon at the top right of the comments section or by selecting either subscribe to "all new comments" or "replies" in the comment box in the comment form.
- Someone in the comments said they wanted to buy an item from me, but it's been x hours and I haven't heard squat. What should I do?I give people 24 hours for the benefit of the doubt. After that move on to the next person that contacted you.
- Someone said they returned an item at the store 20 minutes ago but I just called the store and it's gone. What gives?!?
A store associate might have taken a fancy to it or a customer might have grabbed it. Maybe it's just at the bottom of a big ol'pile. Unfortunately, you're out of luck.

{Weekly} Popbacks Open Thread

Note: Eye Candy will run tomorrow, Reader Outfits on Sunday! (To send your Reader Outfit in, simply email me.)

By request of the community comes this weekly post. Please use this post to list website popbacks that you see on your wishlist, via search engines, or in your shopping cart. Popbacks go very quickly but hopefully by having them in one place will be helpful. Please do not use this post for store sightings -- those should go into the weekly Weekend In-Store Community Post which runs on Fridays at 12:05 PM ET.

What is a popback? It's an item that is no longer accessible through Anthropologie's product sections, sale or search because it previously sold out. Now the item has "popped back" into stock in select sizes and colors but does not show up on the website like other products do. These items are either found through people's wishlists, their online shopping carts, clicking through affiliate links on my old sale posts, or search engines.

Here is a general sample for how to post a popback (note: this is not an actual popback, just a sample!):
Veiled Alder Dress, $298
STYLE #22887426
dark grey
sizes: 2, 6, 8
find it on my public "Effortless Dresses" wishlist by searching for snapsparkchik@gmail.com

And here's a sample for a sale item (note: this is not an actual popback, just a sample!):
Elevenses High-Waisted Trousers, now $30
STYLE #21313945
dark denim
sizes: 4T, 10T
find it on my public "More Effortless" wishlist by searching for snapsparkchik@gmail.com

If possible please include a product photo with your popback. Not sure how to include a photo in a comment? Here's a tutorial.

If you claim a popback please respond to the original comment.

1 - Call Anthropologie's order line at (800)-309-2500. You'll need the style # to place your order.
2 - If you have the item saved to your own wishlist log in, go to your wishlist, add to cart and checkout!
3 - If the item is on someone else's public wishlist, below is a mini-guide on how to find the item.
4 - Google/Bing the product name + Anthropologie (i.e. "Veiled Alder Dress Anthropologie") and choose the result that takes you to the product page.

How to find a public Anthropologie.com wishlist :: Effortless Anthropologie
click on the photo to zoom

1 - Log into your Anthropologie.com account.
2 - Go to the Wishlist page on Anthropologie's website.
3 - The bottom right box is called "Find a Person" (boxed in red in the photo above). Click on the blue search button.
4 - Paste the email address of the person whose wishlist is public in the "email" field and click "search."
5 - The search results should give you a person's name. Click on that. Then choose the correct wishlist.
6 - Once you find the item you want, add it to your cart. Once it's in your cart you can save it to your own wishlist, save it for later, or delete it.

**IMPORTANT** - if an item is OUT OF STOCK you WILL NOT be able to add it to your cart from another wishlist.

If there is other information you'd like me to cover here just let me know in the comments! This post runs every Friday.
